January 27, 2008 - Mark Burroughs, businessman and former Mayor Pro Tem of Denton, announced today his plans to run for Mayor of the City of Denton. Burroughs served on the Denton City Council from 1998 until 2004, when he reached his term limit. Mark has continued his commitment to the City by serving as the Chair of the 2005 Denton Citizens Bond Committee, and he currently serves as Denton Bond Oversight Committee Chairperson and as Vice-Chair of the Denton County Transportation Authority Board.
Mark has been dedicated to the Denton community since he arrived in 1990. He currently serves as a Vice Chair of the Denton Chamber of Commerce and President of the Greater Denton Arts Council, and is an active member of the Denton Rotary Club, the North Texas Clean Air Steering Committee and the Lake Ray Roberts Planning and Zoning Commission. He has been and continues to be active in literally dozens of other community service, civic, public school, transportation, business and public health organizations. Mark has also represented our community with his service on many regional and metroplex boards and organizations.
“I am running for Mayor because I believe that I have the leadership skills that Denton so desperately needs at this critical time. I can help the City recover its vision of the future which has been lost over the past couple of years. The City struggles to efficiently address new development while making certain to include all affected constituencies in that process. We need to get back to a spirit of community cooperation so that great things can happen in Denton. I believe that I have a lot to offer, and the time is right for me as well. With one child in college and the second in high school, I can commit the requisite time from home that was more of a concern to me two years ago when I contemplated running for Mayor. Also, any concern I had dealing with my company’s work on ad valorem taxes disappeared when the City closed its tax office and contracted such services out to the County.”
Mark Burroughs is a shareholder in the Denton law firm of Sawko & Burroughs, P.C. He is married to Annie Burroughs, who has a residential construction business, and is the father of Madeline, a 17-year-old junior at the Texas Academy of Math & Science at UNT, and Mark, Jr., a 15-year-old freshman at Guyer High School. Stan Morton, CEO of Denton’s Presbyterian Hospital, will serve as treasurer of the Mark Burroughs for Mayor Campaign.
